Uther Pendragon

Postby Uther » Wed Apr 20, 2016 8:56 pm

Hello Fellow King Arthur fans.
My name is Michael Maiello, and I wanted to join this forum to really get feedback on a book I have written that I'm in the process of self-publishing. (I am waiting on the cover art to be finalized). The book is about Uther Pendragon. I have read many versions of the Arthurian Legend, and have enjoyed all of the stories I've encountered, some more than others, but I've had a fascination of Uther Pendragon for years, and though some of the versions I've encountered have delved into Uther's story, I've never truly found them satisfying. He's a flawed King to say the least, and I haven't found a story explaining how his backstory contributed to his thinking; so I wrote one, and wanted to see if others would be interested in reading this tale. I'm not trying to sell a book to you, I was wondering if Arthurian fans find Uther Pendragon as interesting as I do, and if his story of his childhood, reign and demise interests others as well.
To confess; I grew up watching the Star Wars movies, and at the age of 8, (I'm 42 now), I saw Empire Strikes Back, and became fascinated with Darth Vader. I researched Mr. Lucas's inspirations for his space odyssey, which pushed me into the Arthurian Legend. The parallels between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker being so similar to Uther and Arthur were motivation enough for me to find every version I could about Uther Pendragon, as he was very similar to Vader, though Lancelot being referred to as the Black Knight, and the mystery surrounding his parentage, can be seen as inspiration for Lucas's character of Darth Vader as well. It was the relationship of the Father falling into darkness and his son redeeming his name postmortem that I was looking for, and never really found. Which is why I wrote a book all about Uther Pendragon; his tragic childhood, his violent reign, and finally his betrayal of everyone he cared for resulting in his ultimate demise.
Just wanted to see if this interested people.
Thank you for reading my post.
Sincerely,
MIke

Hi, Mike. Welcome to the forums!

You have an interesting idea for the book there. I think Uther is one of the less-explored characters in the legend. If you feel he has an important tale to tell, then I would certainly be interested in reading it, and I think a lot of other Arthurian enthusiasts would be too.

I'm interested in the association you draw between him and Darth Vader. Like yourself, I also noticed a parallel between Luke Skywalker and King Arthur, particularly in their relationships with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Merlin, respectively. The association in their mysterious parentage is interesting, although I'd say Darth Vader seems to have fallen to a deeper low than Uther Pendragon. Or did he?

Thank you for replying. I agree about Luke and Merlin's relationship as well. As for Vader falling farther than Uther...
I'll let you be the judge of that once you've had a chance to read my tale.

Uther Pendragon is a fascinating character. Glad to see I'm not alone in thinking so.
